The absence of unloading gates and other appliances that affect internal capacity allowed for additional capacity per car. This improved transportation efficiency for these assigned service cars. The term “Bathtub” gondola is due to the internal shape of the car.

As these steel cars were replaced with lighter aluminum gondolas that could carry yet heavier loads, they entered their second life. While a great number continued to haul coal for other railroads that didn’t require the newest fleet of coal haulers, the low cost of the used freight cars made them an attractive for other uses. Some were retained for MOW fleets. Others found their way to trash and scrap service. Function over aesthetics rule this industry and these cars received extensions adding half again to the cars volume and reinforcements to hold the car together when haphazardly loaded to haul lighter, but bulkier loads.

CP FEATURES:

Chickenwire Grilles

Non-Dynamic Brake hatch

Forward and reverse Ditch lights

Large EMD front plow

Short fuel tank

P3 horn

These units are stand-in representations of BNSF rebuilt GP40-2R, also known as GP40Ms. They are used in bidirectional, local service and are equipped with ditch lights on both ends.

GP40-2 SERIES LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES:

See-through cab windows

Factory installed Celcon handrails

Illuminated front and rear headlights

Illuminated ditch lights and/or strobes (as applicable to road name)

Corrugated or chickenwire grilles

2600 or 3600 gallon fuel tank

5-pole motor with precision-machined flywheels and multi-link drive train for trouble-free operation

All-wheel drive with precision gears for smooth and quiet operation

All-wheel electrical pickup provides reliable current flow

Heavy die-cast frame for greater traction and more pulling power

Separately-applied horns

McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

DCC Ready 21 pin plug

Nickel plated, blackened machined wheels machined metal wheels with RP25 contours operate on all popular brand of track

Fully-assembled and ready-to-run out of the box

Painted and printed for realistic decoration

Highly-detailed, injection-molded body

Minimum radius: 18”

Recommended radius: 22”

NEW FEATURES:

Sound Ready!

All units come with speakers installed!

Ready to add the 21-pin sound decoder of your choice!

PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The EMD GP series locomotives became some of the most successful designs of the age. Both schemes were slightly different from another and only 2575 lasted in this scheme, retired just before the UP merger of 1996. As many were sold off for further use after the merger, UP retained some for use in areas with lighter track and local switch jobs that needed smaller motive power.

MODEL FEATURES:

Lit ground lights

Detailed cab interior

Drop steps unless noted

MU stands

Dual exhaust stacks

Printed numberboards

Fine scale handrails

Signal hoses as appropriate to the prototype road (MU capability was a railroad specified option for these locos, and some railroads did not order it).

Front and rear trainline hoses with silver glad hands

Separately applied wire grab irons

See-through radiator intake grille and cab windows

Low or high mounted windshield wipers per prototype

Rectangular or oval builder’s plate where appropriate

Separately applied air tank

McHenry® scale knuckle couplers - Kadee® compatible

All-wheel drive with precision gears for smooth & quiet operation

All-wheel electrical pickup provides reliable current flow

DCC-ready features Quick Plug™ plug-and-play technology with 21-pin NEM connector

Improved 5-pole skew wound can motor with flywheels and multi-link drivetrain

Wheels with RP25 contours operate on all popular brands of track

Highly-detailed, injection molded body

Interior plastic blister safely holds the model for convenient storage

Minimum radius: 18”

NEW FEATURES:

Operating ground lights

Newly designed can motor is more powerful and quieter than before

DCC-ready models feature 21-pin plug

DCC & sound models feature Economi sound with single cube speaker

LED lighting for long life and reliable operation

SOUND-EQUIPPED MODELS ALSO FEATURE

Onboard DCC decoder with SoundTraxx Economi sound

Single cube speaker for optimal sound quality

Sound units operate in both DC and DCC

Engine, horn, and bell sounds work in DC

Some functions are limited in DC

All functions NMRA compatible in DCC mode

Operating lighting functions with F5 and/or F6

Excellent low-speed operation

Program a multiple unit (MU) lashup with lead unit only horn, bell, and lights

Many functions can be altered via Configuration Value (CV) changes

CV chart included in the box

PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION

An EMD SW1500 is a 4-axle diesel switcher locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1966 and 1974. During the early years of the industry freight was hauled on simple flatcars or early gondolas. The car’s development continued to improve over the years such as switching from basic wood construction with steel outside-bracing. To better enhance crew safety, in 1968 the AAR legislated the removal of roof walks. Boxcars needed to be “modernized” to adhere to the AAR mandate. This was to be completed by 1978 for cars in interchange service. Some of these cars had side and end ladders cut down, in some cases, modification included lowering the brake wheel. What made boxcars great, at least in the eyes of the railroads, was, their ability to haul about anything! Railroads thrive on redundancy to maximize efficiency.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0903/5923/4839/files/ATH88195_A0_G5NWVQ1F_7686b020-23b0-43b8-8aa1-c41d7f69616d.jpg?v=1763345173
ho-gen-57-fge-mechanical-reefer-w-sound-bnfe-green-12501
ATHG-1128 Athearn HO 57' Reefer w/Sound - BNFE #12501

HO 57' FGE Mechanical Reefer w/Sound - BNFE 'Green' #12501

57’ MECHANICAL REEFER FEATURES:

Available with onboard SoundTraxx sound

Scaled from prototype manufacturer’s drawings and field measurements

Repaints often vary by road number in the size and style of the reporting marks, car numbers and patch shapes

See-through protective screens on the reefer end

End wall corrugation visible inside

Inner refrigerator bulkhead

See through end platforms

Two different exhaust stack types: straight pipe with “flapper” or T-shaped “smokejack” per prototype and era

Full underframe detail including Keystone cushioning, air brake reservoir, control valve, brake cylinder, brake plumbing, and fuel tank

Factory applied end ladders and door closure rods

Trainline hoses with silver ends

Three different coupler cut lever styles per prototype

Body-mounted or truck-mounted brakes per prototype

McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers

100-ton roller bearing trucks with rotating bearing caps

Fully-assembled and ready-to-run

Accurately painted and printed for prototypical realism

Highly-detailed, injection-molded body

Machined metal wheels with RP25 contours

Weighted for trouble-free operation

Minimum radius: 18” — Recommended radius: 22”

SOUND-EQUIPPED MODELS ALSO FEATURE:

Sound recorded from actual reefer unit

Sound randomly cycles on and off

Utilizes minimum track power

Volume can be manually adjusted on the sound board

PRIMED FOR GRIME MODELS FEATURE:

Duplicated look and feel of “In Service” equipment

Faded base colors matched to the prototype

Perfect starting point for adding grime and rust

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

One of the greatest freight car innovations of the 20th century was the creation of the refrigerator car, commonly referred to as a “reefer.” The ability to haul perishables such as fruits, vegetables and meat products across the country was a major factor in the development of modern America. The carrier worked with General Motors Electro-Motive Division to design new passenger locomotives. The result was the SDP40F. Built by EMD from 1973–1974 for Amtrak and for a brief time they formed the backbone of Amtrak’s long-distance passenger fleet. With 150 built, the SDP40F became the “face” of Amtrak in the mid-1970s as they were found on the head ends of passenger trains from San Diego to Washington DC and from Seattle to Miami. Several were rebuilt and found a second life with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in freight service.

The design of the SDP40F was based on the EMD FP45 passenger locomotive. Both shared the EMD 645E3 diesel engine, although the SDP40F had 16 cylinders instead of 20. The space saved from the smaller prime mover was given over to increased water capacity. The SDP40F had an underbody tank split between water and diesel fuel, carrying 2,000 gallons of water and 2,500 gallons of diesel. A second 1,500 gallon water tank sat in the carbody, forward of the steam generators which produced the steam needed for supplying heat (and sometimes cooling) and hot water for the train.

Eventually, the SDP40F was phased out as all-electric cars, such as the Amfleet, displaced the old steam heat rolling stock. While the SDP40F was designed with conversion to head-end power (HEP) in mind, the bad press they received, cost to upgrade and overhaul the units, and Amtrak’s satisfaction with the versatility of the HEP-equipped F40PH ultimately doomed the SDP40F. Amtrak was able to trade in the SDP40Fs to EMD as more F40PH units were acquired in the late 1970s. The last SDP40F was retired from Amtrak in the early 1980s.

In 1984, Santa Fe Railway traded lower-power locomotives to Amtrak for 18 SDP40Fs, horsepower-for-horsepower. The SDP40Fs were reconditioned in the railroad’s San Bernardino, California shops to the designation SDF40-2 for use as freight locomotives. Santa Fe replaced the hollow HTC bolsters with conventional HTC bolsters, converted the below-frame combination fuel/water tank to an all-fuel tank, removed the above-frame water tanks (replacing these with concrete ballast) and used the engines for nearly 15 years. They were also given front steps and platforms. Their noses were notched after a second maintenance shop visit in order to improve boarding access. In exchange, Amtrak received 43 smaller locomotives for use in switching service.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0903/5923/4839/files/ATHG64124_A0_RMB7KSJQ_9357bc09-b337-4caf-8be6-7bbcf12c16e1.jpg?v=1763614338
ho-sdp40f-w-dcc-sound-atsf-5264
ATHG64225 Athearn HO SDP40F w/DCC & Sound - ATSF #5264

ATSF FEATURES:

Classification lights (Function in DCC only)

Beacon (Flash function in DCC only)

Air Conditioner

Number board lights

Working Truck lights

Separate see-through air intake grills

MU hoses

In the early 1980’s when Amtrak was in the process of the final purge of their SDP40F fleet they struck a deal with Santa Fe in which they traded 18 of the SDP40F’s (with which the Santa Fe had not had any derailment issues) for 25 Santa Fe CF7’s and 18 of their rebuilt switchers. This arrangement proved to be problematical when trying to perform rolling crew changes, so they then closed off the front steps and platform to prevent crews from using them for safety reasons.

ROAD NUMBER SPECIFIC FEATURES:

#5264

Open steps and open platform

A/C

forward beacon & horn

SDP40F SERIES LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES:

Illuminated ground lights

Illuminated classification lights

Illuminated number boards

Front and rear trainline hoses

Non-skid end walks

Front and rear 3-hose M.U. hose clusters with silver ends

Detailed and painted cab interior with control stand

4,500 gallon split fuel/water or rebuilt fuel only tank

HTC sideframes with high brake cylinders and air lines

Flush mounted portal window glass

Minimum radius: 18” — Recommended radius: 22”

GENESIS DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES:

Coupler cut levers

MU hoses

Trainline hose

See-through cab windows

Full cab interior

Walkway tread

Windshield wipers

Wire grab irons

Sander lines

Lift rings

DCC-ready features Quick Plug™ plug-and-play technology with 21-pin NEM connector

Fine-scale Celcon handrails for scale appearance

Detailed fuel tank with fuel fillers, fuel gauges, breather pipes, and retention tanks

Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

Genesis driveline with 5-pole skew wound motor, precision machined flywheels, and multi-link drivetrain for trouble free operation

Eight-wheel drive with precision gears for smooth and quiet operation

All-wheel electrical pickup provides reliable current flow

Wheels with RP25 contours operate on all popular brands of track

LED Lighting for trouble free operation

Heavy die-cast frame for greater traction and more pulling power

Scaled from prototype resources including drawings, field measurements, photographs, and more

Accurately-painted and –printed paint schemes

Fully-assembled and ready-to-run

Packaging securely holds the model for safe storage

SOUND-EQUIPPED MODELS ALSO FEATURE

Onboard DCC decoder with SoundTraxx Tsunami2 sound

Dual sugar cube speakers for optimal sound quality

Sound units operate in both DC and DCC

Full DCC functions available when operated in DCC mode

Engine, horn, and bell sounds work in DC

All functions NMRA compatible in DCC mode

Precision slow speed control

Program a multiple unit (MU) lashup with lead unit only horn, bell, and lights

Many functions can be altered via Configuration Value (CV) changes

CV chart included in the box

PROTOTYPE SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Formed in 1971, Amtrak took over operation of most of America’s passenger trains with an assortment of old locomotives, primarily decades-old E-units.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0903/5923/4839/files/ATHG64225_A0_9HO924GB_eaa1c458-2bb5-4a21-81d3-6c6cef0ddfc4.jpg?v=1763611481
ho-gp50-atsf-3822
ATHG65832 Athearn HO GP50 - ATSF #3822

ATSF FEATURES:

Nose headlight

ATSF style antennas and stands

Art supplied by ATSF experts

Roof-mounted A/C

Forward ditch lights

Small EMD plow

Moved Leslie 3-chime horn to carbody

Correct exhaust silencer per road number

By the early 1990’s, Santa Fe’s GP50’s started to get some changes from the original appearance. It is powered by a 16-cylinder EMD 645F3B diesel engine, which can produce between 3,500 and 3,600 hp.

A total of 278 examples of this locomotive were built. The GP50 retains the same overall length of 59 feet 2 inches as the other GP dash-2 series locomotives built in the same era. It utilized GM’s D87 traction motor enabling it to produce a starting tractive effort of 65,000 pounds, with a continuous rating of 62,400 pounds.

The most significant difference in the GP50 from earlier designs like the GP40 was upgraded components (like a turbocharger silencer and new type of blower housing) and increased horsepower. The locomotive also introduced a new “anti-wheel-slip” technology where the locomotive horsepower output was reduced if a wheel slip condition was introduced. It also included features already common on earlier models such as dynamic braking (a system for temporarily employing traction motors as generators and using the resulting electromotive force to slow the train), and an airtight hood that kept out dust, dirt and other particles from reaching internal components.

All the companies that purchased the GP50 have now been absorbed into other systems. However, a few of their successors continue to operate the units. The basic design followed most four axle road diesel switchers for the time. Borrowing improvements from the GP38-2 and GP40-2 designs, this mid-horsepower road switcher utilized a turbocharged 12-cylinder EMD 645E3 diesel engine for its prime mover. With 4 fewer cylinders, the smaller engine provided a distinctive long hood on the phase II and phase III bodies, where the clean room/engine compartment doors were set back from the cab further than predecessor locomotives.

Sensitivity to fuel economy in the 1970s justified the GP39-2 in the locomotive market. It also laid the ground work for EMD to start exploring locomotive designs that utilize engines with larger piston displacement yet possess fewer cylinders. A product of Bethlehem Steel Company’s (BSC) Johnstown, PA plant, over 9,000 of these (89’ 8” over the strikers) cars were built throughout the 1960s. Visually distinctive from other long flatcars of their era thanks to their “C” channel side sills, these versatile cars were adapted for many types of service and loadings over the years, ranging from Trailer-On-Flatcar (TOFC), to autoracks, to structural steel loading. While the majority went to Trailer Train, many were built for various railroads, typically for autorack service. Many were “de-racked” in later years, being reassigned and equipped for other service - TOFC, vehicle loading, pipe service, etc.

It wasn’t unusual for these cars to see several different loading configurations throughout their careers, to meet the changing needs of shippers. In service with Trailer Train, the three or four-letter reporting marks indicated the cars’ intended service and corresponding equipment. For example, an “XTTX” car was equipped with four collapsible hitches, capable of carrying various combinations of 28’, 40’, or 45’ trailers. A car in the “RTTX” configuration featured a pair of fixed hitches at the ends, and a retractable hitch amidships, allowing it to carry a pair of long (up to 45’) trailers back-to-back, or three 28’ “pup” trailers.

This Athearn Genesis model was designed from the start to incorporate as many prototype details and variations as possible, based upon field measurements and builder diagrams, to appeal to modelers of multiple eras. Many new hitches, body variants, and other separate details were created, allowing us to accurately offer these cars in their different configurations over the years, from four-hitch “XTTX” cars to the distinctive drawbar-connected “TTEX” Triple-57 “Long Runner” bulge-deck conversions introduced in 1987. And you can rest assured of its smooth performance, thanks to a heavy die-cast frame for reliable tracking, and our famed Genesis 70-ton ASF Ride-Control trucks with spinning bearing cap details, and .110” tread metal wheels.

Operationally, these cars are appropriate for any layout set from the 1960s to the present day. In TOFC service, F89Fs could be found mixed into manifest trains, or as part of dedicated TOFC trains. It also wasn’t uncommon to find them mixed into stack trains, alongside such cars as Gunderson Maxi-Is or Maxi-IIIs, which are also available from Athearn. The new F89F also goes great with Athearn’s extensive line of 40’, 45’, and 53’ trailers, not to mention our various 20’, 40’, 45’, 48’, and 53’ containers mounted on chassis, all of which are available in many different paint schemes to appeal to modelers of all eras.

HO SD75M - ATSF #209

ATSF FEATURES:

As-delivered appearance

Small EMD plow

Round deck mounted front ditch lights

Large Sinclair antenna

Early EMD trucks with hidden bearings

Santa Fe’s last official EMD order before the BNSF merger, was for 51 SD75M’s placed in 1994. While outwardly similar at first glance to the SD60M, the D.C.-drive SD70M featured several external design refinements from the predecessor model. Battery boxes were relocated to the left-hand side walkway immediately behind the cab, a large, boxy forward traction motor blower housing replaced the angular version used on SD60s, the raised walkway duct on the left hand walkway was eliminated, and an intake for the rear traction motor blower on the left hand side of the carbody, directly under the rear radiator intake grill, was added.

Internally, the SD70 boasted improvements as well; a 16-710GB prime mover, rated at 4,000hp, was coupled to a new alternator design, the AR20. New D70TR traction motors were standard, and controlling all of this power and locomotive function was EMD’s new EM2000 microprocessor, which boasted more memory, twice the processing speed, and improved locomotive self-diagnostic capabilities compared to the processor suite used in the SD60. Even more revolutionary was the inclusion of EMD’s patented “Radial” truck design, the HTC-R. This design, which made its debut under EMD Demo SD60 #3, replaced the venerable HT-C truck, and is unique in its ability to shift, or “steer”, the wheelsets laterally through curves, resulting in greatly reduced wheelset and track wear, and coupled with the new D70TR traction motors and EM2000 microprocessor, greatly improved adhesion.

Continuing with previous practice, EMD built a set of Demonstrator SD70Ms, EMD 7000-7002, all equipped with the North American safety-cab (hence the “M” in their model designation), and decked out in an attractive gray, silver, and burgundy paint scheme. These units traveled all over North America, showing off the latest technology from EMD. Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad requested a 4300 horsepower version resulting in the SD75M. As production continued, EMD incorporated their new “Whisper Cab” design resulting in the SD75I. Cabooses provided shelter for the rear end crew. From the cupola or bay windows, the crew could keep a lookout for shifting loads, damaged equipment, and overheating axles, this was long required for switching and shunting. As rail cars became larger in the late 1950s and early 1960s, there was a real need for cabooses to have greater visibility for the crew. In the extended-vision or wide-vision caboose, the sides of the cupola project beyond the side of the car body. This model was introduced by the International Car Company and saw service on most U.S. railroads. The expanded cupola allowed the crew to see past the top of the taller cars that began to appear after World War II, and increased the roominess of the cupola area.

MODEL FEATURES:

Three different body styles

Detailed underbody including outlet piping

Rectangular or oval shaker brackets

Gravity or gravity-pneumatic outlets

See through metal roof walk

Factory installed wire grab irons and brake piping

Separately applied round roof hatches and brake wheel

Roller bearing or Bettendorf trucks

Machined metal wheels with RP25 contours

Weighted for optimum performance

Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

Accurately painted and printed

Highly detailed, injection molded body

Minimum radius: 18”

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

For the first half of the 20th century, bulk goods were usually bagged and carried in boxcars. After the late 1940s, covered hoppers greatly simplified the process by allowing the bulk material to be poured in through the roof hatches and dumped out the hopper bays. However, flour, starch, sugar and plastics do not “flow” easily from a standard hopper bay.

To solve this problem, the Fuller Company of Catasauqua, PA, patented the Airslide concept. In an Airslide covered hopper, the bays are formed into two narrow, steep-sided troughs with a layer of air-permeable material at the bottom. Air is pumped through the material causing the lading to fluidize and flow easily through the hopper outlets.

Starting in 1953, General American Transportation began building Airslide covered hoppers. One of the two original configurations was a 2,600-cubic foot, single-bay car with a 70-ton capacity. In addition to railroad-owned cars, there were several Airslide covered hoppers leased by GATC to sugar and bakery companies. Later, larger cars were introduced as the railroads continued to improve their infrastructure. To extend the useful lives of the smaller 2600 cuft cars, some of them were permanently connected in 2-unit drawbar sets. The company didn’t enter the railroad freight car market until 1984, when Trinity acquired the railcar designs and production facilities of the Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company, once the largest railcar manufacturer in North America. That same year Trinity also acquired the railcar designs of General American Transportation Corporation. In 1986 the rail car designs, and production facilities of Greenville Steel Car Company were purchased, including the auto rack designs of Portec-Paragon. Also acquired in 1986 were the railcar designs of North American Car Corporation, and in 1987 Ortner Freight Car was acquired.

With this collective experience across several facilities, Trinity developed many new designs that became ubiquitous to present day railroading. One of their most famous designs is the 3-bay 5161cuft covered hopper. This covered hopper is optimized to transport agricultural products, sugar, dry chemicals, or other similar products and can be seen in unit train assignments all over North America. Introduced around 1995, these cars are extremely common today and owned by many Class 1 and short line railroads alike.

HO Bethgon Coalporter with Load, BNSF #668001, #668016, #668039, #668057, #668078

MODEL FEATURES:

Newly Re-tooled Body

Separate wire form grab irons, etched metal coupler platforms

Separately applied brake wheel

Multiple road numbers

36” machined metal wheels with RP25 contours

Weighted for optimum performance

Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

Highly-detailed, injection-molded body

Painted and printed for realistic decoration

Minimum radius: 18”

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

The Coalporter was developed in an effort to create a higher-capacity, more efficient coal car.

The drawbar sets operated as a single car, and therefore had a whopping total capacity of 5,200 cuft- although their substantial length was a notable drawback.

HO 60' Pullman Standard Auto Box Car - Frisco #9013

MODEL FEATURES:

Accurately painted and printed for prototypical realism

Highly-detailed, injection-molded body

Fully detailed full cushion underframe

Full underframe detail: air brake reservoir, control valve,

Separately applied door closure rods, side ladders, metal grab irons and

and brake cylinder with plumbing and brake rod details

etched metal end platforms

100-Ton roller bearing trucks with operating bearing caps

Coupler lift bars, trainline hoses, brake hoses, and hardware

Machined metal wheels

Weighted for trouble free operation

Multiple road numbers

Minimum radius: 22”

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:

During the 1960’s, Ford Motor Company, Pullman Standard and Santa Fe pooled their resources to develop a standard boxcar to meet the transportation needs of automobile manufacturers in the United States. The cars handle loads such as grain, corn and similar bulk commodities. The Centerflow design relies on the car's rounded body to provide structural strength - eliminating the traditional center sill, and making gravity unloading easier.

Our 3-bay car represents the common 4600 cu.ft. capacity version. The railroads looking to replace their aging 40' box cars in grain service needed a modern hopper design - one that could operate within the tighter Plate B clearances for light branchline and industrial service. ACF's design won them many contracts from a plethora of railroads. One can find these cars still in revenue service today in grain trains and other similar service.

Union Pacific CA-8 Caboose FEATURES:

Caboose trucks with swing arms, friction or animated roller bearing bearing caps as prototype appropriate

Various safety slogans, in both early banner style with green lettering and late vinyl decal with special graphics

Sliding cupola side windows

Cupola-mounted marker lights when appropriate

25576 is offered in an early CA-8 Pool service configuration

HO 50' FMC 5347 Box, CSXT #142604

MODEL FEATURES:

Newly tooled bodies with road specific doors

Separately applied grab irons, end ladders and brake wheel

Photo etched cross-over platform

Weighted for optimum performance

33” machined metal wheels with RP25 contours

Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers

Painted and printed for realistic decoration

Minimum radius: 18”

PROTOTYPE HISTORY:

It was the mid-1970s, and the incentive per diem box car boom was just beginning. New, brightly painted box cars seemed to appear overnight. Many were lettered for various short lines. FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) was a significant builder of many of these cars. The 50’ outside post, non-terminating end box car, became the foundation for new per diem cars built in the 1970s. The 50’ FMC cars also varied in door configuration and style to better suit each customer.
